Phosphatidylserine (PS), a natural lipid that is part of our body, is clinically proven to improve mood. It was shown to reduce the increase in a hormone,cortisol, which naturally occurs as part of the body’s reaction to negative mood changes.
PS has clinically proven benefits on mood –
Cortisol level increases when a person becomes gloomy or experiences a low mood. For 25 years it has been known that PS reduces cortisol levels in both blood and saliva. In a clinical study of elderly people, the control group reported a close to 30% increase in their negative mood after 12 weeks, while those who took daily PS supplements reported almost no increase in negativity, indicating that PS can improve mood.

Consumption of PS improved mood in the elderly

Elderly people are often bothered by feelings of gloom. The development of “winter blues” during the change of seasons is a typical occurrence. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 57 elderly subjects who consumed PS (300 mg/day) for 12 weeks, there was almost no development of “winter blues”, while those with no PS intake suffered from a significant reduction in their mood.

Elderly people are often bothered by feelings of gloom. In a pilot study of 18 late-age elderly people experiencing low mood, participants consumed a combination of PS (300 mg/day) and omega-3 (570 mg/day) (Sharp-PS silver) for 12 weeks, followed by a validating test of their mood status. The effect of PS was striking, with a pronounced mood improvement, correlated with the time period of PS intake.

The minimal dose of PS shown to improve moods is 300 mg/day. Clinical studies with PS intake show benefits after 12 weeks of consumption. Some clinical studies show further benefit in mood improvement when combining PS with omega-3. While PS is a dietary supplement that may benefit those who are in a gloomy state, it is not recommended as a drug for those suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). MDD is considered a disease and should be treated by trained professionals.
